OPIUM
The Sky is Blue
The Grass is Green
MATTER & MOTION
CONTIGUITY

Author  Evgeniy Bortnikov

The artist renowned for his graphic miniatures and wood engraving bookplates is now presenting his new photomontage show.  The show comprises ten Pentaprint photomontages, each having rather a considerable dimensions of  90 х 66 sm. Each leaf is filled with bright patterns of cloned parts of women’s bodies. Those intricate images conjure up an Eastern harem where sweet beauties lie down sprawled. Opium is nothing more than an artistic metaphor. The meaningful name not only alludes to Eastern opium houses, but also to the images of the dreamland, the erotica, and even transfers one to another dimension. The Arabian Nights themes, the Eastern opulence, and the fairytale fancy with a sensual tinge make up the world of the exhibition.

The exhibition includes eleven large-format and two miniature aquatint etchings, as well as unique watercolor graphics and video art. Simple, fresh and joyful: the perfection of the world! The blue sky and silky grass are the two eternal subjects for admiration. The actual language of the art video promotes a serene mood of perception. Blue and green hues and thorny black graphics create a lively tension between similar color combinations and a bright crisp energy, like that of water and fresh fruit. A series of runic symbols extracted from Windows OS create a special impression of a text encoding. The health and the cool of lime green and aqua colors convey aggressive rebellious age, a thirst for novelty and a good mood. At the same time, pronouncedly laconic style and excellent technique of the young master are there.

The matter of our world is in constant flow. Incessantly it generates new shapes, old ones fall apart. To document this inescapable process, to take a snapshot of the fleeting moment while celebrating the beauty of the ephemeral – it is this timeless task we as creators of art confront ourselves with time and again. And yet, even the resulting works do not escape decay, but merely provide a starting point for another motion in the cycle of matter.

..."   The drawings still exude a delicate and sweet smell of wine, an important element of the work, as it tends to dispose the viewer into a more relaxed and engaging experience, triggering all kinds of personal memories and associations. As time passes the wine scent, and perhaps the color of the wine as well will gradually fade, thereby turning the drawings into a faded monument to these memories, like an ancient relic, but one that even at its start was something of a dream".
